African hairstyles carry stories that go far beyond beauty. They hold codes, cultural identity markers, and survival strategies that have been overlooked by mainstream history for far too long. Franco-Senegalese and Congolese artist Marianne Costade is changing that. Since 2021, she’s been building a comprehensive visual archive documenting ancestral and contemporary hair traditions through photography, performance, and self-documentation. What started as self-portraits in a photo booth has grown into a powerful artistic practice that reveals the deeper meaning woven into every braid, twist, and pattern.

Costade describes herself as an“archaeologist of Black memory,”and that’s exactly what her work accomplishes. By recreating historical styles like Yoruba‘Koroba,’Malagasy‘Somala,’and map braids, she’s uncovering stories of resistance and ingenuity. Those map braids are particularly striking—enslaved Africans encoded escape routes into cornrow patterns, literally braiding paths to freedom into their hair. Other styles communicated cultural status, belonging, and identity. Through her installations combining photography and performance, Costade creates intimate spaces where viewers can sit with these histories and understand their significance.

At a moment when Black history continues to be challenged and erased, Costade’s work serves as a crucial reminder that memory and resistance live in the traditions we carry. Her archive ensures that future generations will understand that hair was never just about aesthetics—it was always about survival, culture, and the refusal to be forgotten. What traditions or family stories do you think deserve to be documented and preserved for future generations?
