The vessel’s crew spotted the bear resting on land and decided to sound the horn, which woke the animal and forced it to relocate. Governor Lars Fause issued the fine under local regulations that have protected polar bears in Svalbard since 1972. The unidentified operator reportedly agreed to pay without a fight.
Svalbard sits about 620 miles from the North Pole, making it one of the most remote places on Earth. It’s also prime polar bear territory, so rules there are strict when it comes to human interaction. Disturbing a protected species is no small matter, even if the animal appears unbothered by the commotion.
