A dramatic crash on Monday morning shut down parts of the I-5 and I-80 interchange in Sacramento after a box truck careened off the elevated roadway and landed on San Juan Road below. The crash happened around the morning commute hours, creating major delays as emergency crews responded to the scene.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the box truck first hit two vehicles on westbound I-80 before continuing onto the northbound I-5 transition. At that point, the truck broke through a metal guardrail and fell onto the street below. Sacramento Fire Department crews had to extricate the driver from the wreckage. He was taken to a local trauma facility in critical condition. A person in one of the other vehicles suffered minor injuries.
CHP is actively investigating the cause of the crash. No arrests have been made, and no additional details about the driver or other involved parties have been released. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage is encouraged to contact the CHP Sacramento office. Have you ever seen a crash on this interchange? Share your story in the comments.
