In a heartwarming tribute to achievement, Elk Grove recently hosted the annual A. Dale Lacky Scholar-Athlete Awards breakfast, honoring 48 exceptional student-athletes from across Northern California. These talented individuals weren’t just dribbling basketballs or running track; they were also hitting the books hard, earning praise for their academic excellence as well as their athletic prowess. The California Interscholastic Federation Sac-Joaquin Section made it clear: being a star athlete also means being a star in the classroom.

Scholarships up to $3,000 were awarded during the ceremony, highlighting the hard work and dedication of these students. Among the standout winners were Cooper Barr from Placer High School and Haley Smith from Liberty Ranch High School, who took home the prestigious Clarke Coover Award. With stories of grit and determination, these students reminded everyone that balancing sports with studies is no easy feat.

As Maxwell Graef from Dixon High School put it, waking up at 5 a.m. and juggling two practices a day while keeping up with schoolwork can be quite the challenge. But with solid time management and a supportive network, these students are not just surviving high school – they’re thriving! This breakfast is more than just an event; it’s a celebration of commitment and achievement that leaves us all asking one big question: What’s next for these remarkable young women and men?
