Der Biergarten, the beloved Midtown beer garden on K Street, has officially expanded to the Sacramento waterfront. The Derfield family held their grand opening Friday at the Steamer’s Building, 1108 Front Street, in Old Sacramento. The new location features 1,550 square feet of outdoor communal seating and 750 square feet of indoor space, giving guests a front-row view of riverboats and the occasional sea lion.

The menu stays true to the original, with German pretzels, sausages, and a selection of imported German and Belgian beers. Co-owner Sean Derfield said the goal was to bring the same communal atmosphere people love in Midtown to the waterfront. This opening marks the 13th small business to launch in Old Sacramento this year, following significant city investment in the district including a completed riverfront deck, boardwalk repairs, and a planned children’s play area. The city is also actively seeking a new operator for the former Rio City Café site.

Whether you’re a longtime fan of the original K Street location or just looking for a new summer spot by the river, the new Der Biergarten is worth the trip. Have you made it down to Old Sacramento to check out the new waterfront beer garden yet?
