Federal Subpoenas Target Nonprofit Behind Newsom's Travel: What Sacramento Listeners Need to Know

Federal subpoenas are reportedly seeking six years of records from the California State Protocol Foundation, the nonprofit that has raised more than $7.5 million for Governor Gavin Newsom’s travel since 2019. According to subpoenas reviewed by the San Francisco Standard, investigators also want testimony and communications involving Newsom and his current and former aides. The documents suggest a possible look at improper gifts or influence peddling, but they do not cite a specific crime, and no one has been charged.

Newsom’s office dismissed the investigation as a baseless MAGA conspiracy theory. Sources close to the probe deny any political motivation, saying it grew out of tips to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Sacramento. That detail matters locally: the Eastern District of California is the same office handling the case against Dana Williamson, Newsom’s former chief of staff, whose sentencing was recently delayed to October 8 following an unplanned surgery.
