A TikTok creator who goes by Phlin, or Flynn, says his August 2024 date at a Melbourne frozen yogurt chain called Yo Chi started sweet and ended with a bill of about $330. According to his video, his date reached for the biggest cup in the shop and loaded it with crumble, M&Ms, and Oreo, while he stuck with a normal-size cup and a careful scoop of strawberries and boba. When they reached the register, staff asked if they were together. He paid, then says he never spoke to her again.

The clip drew 277,600 likes and 11,000 comments, and the backlash mostly landed on him. One commenter put it bluntly: if frozen yogurt is breaking your bank, it’s time to assess your budget. Others questioned why he shared the story publicly at all, since the woman’s eating habits weren’t hurting anybody. The Daily Dot noted it couldn’t verify the date’s identity or the exact total, so the story leans on his word alone.

Still, the debate it kicked off is one plenty of folks know well. Who pays on a first date? Is going big on the toppings a red flag or just a person enjoying a night out? And when a story like this goes viral, does the court of public opinion ever get it right? We want to hear your take. What’s the most expensive first date you’ve ever been on, and did you see a second one?
