A Philippines fisherman got more than he bargained for on a recent fishing trip. Jesser Cervantes was out on his small boat near Puerto Princesa Island when he caught an octopus. The creature, apparently unhappy with being caught, latched onto his face and covered his mouth with its powerful suckers. Cervantes said it almost ripped his face and struggled to breathe as the octopus refused to let go.
Desperate to break free, Cervantes grabbed a cut bamboo stem and repeatedly struck the octopus until it finally released its grip. Once free, he threw the octopus back into the ocean. Experts say octopus suckers are incredibly difficult to remove because each one acts as an independent, airtight vacuum seal, making a scenario like this nearly impossible to pry off with bare hands.
It was a wild, visual encounter that shows just how unpredictable nature can be. And while the fisherman came out on top, it’s safe to say he’ll never look at seafood the same way again.
