Jelly Roll Says He'd Give Up Music to Work at a Kentucky Homeless Shelter If God Calls Him

Jelly Roll has three Grammys, an ACM and CMA shelf full of hardware, and a Grand Ole Opry membership. By his own account, he has done everything he set out to do in music. So when Kelly Sutton from Y’all Access Radio asked him backstage at the Opry what comes next, he didn’t talk about the next tour or the next record. He talked about God, and he talked about Paducah, Kentucky.

“If God tells me to go work at a homeless shelter in Paducah, Ky., I’m outta here,”he said. That’s not a throwaway line from a guy who has spent years telling fans the truth about his past. He also said he is taking time off the road, and that he is“completely sober,”clear-headed, deep in therapy, and deep in his Bible. For an artist whose whole story is built on second chances, this is the next chapter, and he’s letting fans hear it in real time.

The music isn’t gone yet. He showed up at the Grand Ole Opry to honor the late Dolly Parton, singing“9 to 5”with Carly Pearce, a moment that showed his voice and his heart are still right where they’ve always been. There’s been plenty of personal upheaval too, including his divorce from Bunnie Xo after nearly a decade of marriage, so a step back from the road makes sense.
