Placerville’s Squid Saves the Planet is proof that the best music doesn’t need a corporate machine behind it. The band consists of brothers Jonathan, Dylan, and Tim Punturo along with family friend Freya Ahrima. They’ve been together for less than a year, but their blend of odd time signatures, shoegaze textures, and emo ballads has already caught the attention of NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest. Their sound is hard to pin down: part math rock, part psychedelic dreamscape, part honest punk energy.
The band is proudly DIY and anti-capitalist. Vocalist and guitarist Jonathan Punturo says it’s all about encouraging others to be creative and free. Bassist Dylan and drummer Tim bring the rhythm while Freya adds layers of guitar and harmony. Their live show is raw, energetic, and unpolished in the best way. They’ll perform at the Hearth in Sacramento on August 21. No cover charge, no slick marketing. Just four people making music that matters to them.
