A Memphis man was asleep in his apartment on Madewell Street when two intruders kicked open his barricaded door around 4:40 a.m. Tuesday. Devonta Johnson and Zarian Sanders went straight to the bedroom and started beating him. During the attack, Johnson pulled a handgun, and the victim managed to grab the weapon during the struggle and shoot him. Johnson died from his injuries at the scene.
Police say Sanders then struck the victim with a rifle, took the handgun, and fled. The 23-year-old was later arrested and charged with especially aggravated burglary along with other counts. Records show Sanders was convicted just last September of theft of a firearm, which has a lot of folks asking how he was back on the street so soon.
The victim survived and was treated for his injuries. Cases like this always stir up strong feelings about self-defense, repeat offenders, and the right to protect your own home. One comment making the rounds online said it plain:“If you don’t want the time, don’t do the crime.”
What would you do if someone kicked your door in at four in the morning? Sound off in the comments.
