Governor Gavin Newsom said this week that it’s“deeply unfair”for trans girls and women to compete in girls’sports, a notable break from his party’s long-standing position. He’s not alone. Democratic candidates and officeholders in Texas, Iowa, Ohio, and Massachusetts have also distanced themselves from the party line as the issue gains traction heading into the 2026 midterms.
The political math is hard to ignore. A Quinnipiac poll found about 7 in 10 voters oppose trans women and girls playing on women’s teams, and at least 25 states now enforce bans after the Supreme Court upheld those laws earlier this year. Republicans are already running ads on the issue against Democrats in key Senate races, and potential 2028 presidential candidates are splitting on where to land.
For Sacramento, the debate is more than national noise. State government writes these policies, local schools navigate them on the field, and families across the region are trying to balance fairness with inclusion. Activists on both sides are divided over whether Democrats are pivoting on principle or just politics. Either way, this one isn’t going away before November.
