Australian athlete Joanna Wietrzyk won the women’s solo HYROX race in Beijing on September 12 with a time of 61 minutes and 23 seconds. What has everyone talking isn’t her speed. It’s the fact that she soiled herself during the race and kept competing, with spectators filming what happened to her legs. Organizers didn’t step in during the event, and cleaning crews spent the night decontaminating the course and replacing carpets.

Now HYROX China has asked HYROX HQ to add rules covering severe physical discomfort and health risks, including course management, event suspension and how results get determined. Online critics argued she should have been disqualified immediately as a biohazard risk. Others say pulling a winning athlete mid-race for a bodily function feels like a judgment call no one should have to make on the fly.

Wietrzyk herself seems unbothered. She posted an Instagram Story selfie with an IV drip and the caption“Go hard or go home…a win is a win.”Whatever side of the fence you land on, this story raises real questions about health, hygiene and fair play at big fitness events. So what do you think: should she have been pulled, or do you respect the finish? Drop your take in the comments.
