Ruby Setnik began performing stand-up at The Met while she was still a high school student in Sacramento. She kept going, built a national touring schedule, and in 2025 landed a spot in Netflix Is A Joke’s“Introducing…”showcase. The résumé is real, and it started in a room right here in town.

Then came the detour. Burned out on comedy, Setnik stepped away for a year and looked for a regular job. A grocery store didn’t hire her. She went back to the stage instead and now jokes that the economy made chasing her dream the financially responsible choice. That line lands because a lot of people in this region know exactly what she means.

She performs at Punchline Sacramento on Saturday, September 12. In November she joins Bert Kreischer on a comedy cruise, which brings up complicated memories of living on a boat as a child after her parents’bankruptcy. She also holds a bachelor’s degree in comedy from Hampshire College, proof that a comedy thesis can turn into a career. Anyone planning to catch the Punchline show this weekend?
