Sacramento Congressional Debate: Matsui vs. Vang on Experience, Health Care, and Military Spending

Sacramento’s 7th Congressional District race heated up Thursday night when Rep. Doris Matsui and City Councilmember Mai Vang clashed over experience, legislative priorities, and how to fix health care. Vang positioned herself as a fresh voice with 10 years of governing experience on the Sacramento City Council plus 20 years working on policy issues, arguing her local track record compares favorably to where Matsui started. Matsui countered that Congress operates on relationships and committee assignments you have to earn through seniority and political capital—skills that don’t automatically transfer from City Hall.

The candidates drew sharp contrasts on two major issues. On health care, Matsui supports universal coverage but cautioned against treating Medicare for All as a guaranteed solution, saying we need to study costs and learn from other countries’models. Vang pushed back hard, arguing that our current system is broken and that as the richest country in the world, we can afford to provide care to all our residents. On military spending, Vang called for redirecting trillions spent on overseas conflicts toward domestic priorities like education and health care, while Matsui stressed that Democrats need House control to exercise real oversight of the Trump administration through hearings and the War Powers Resolution. The candidates did find common ground on Social Security, both insisting it needs full protection and adequate funding.

With ballots expected to arrive in about five weeks for the November election, Sacramento voters now face a genuine choice about whether they want institutional knowledge and congressional experience or fresh local perspective and new ideas.
