Sacramento knows a thing or two about summer heat, and Sundays at the farmers market on X Street have turned into an early riser’s game. The market officially opens at 8 a.m., but the parking lot starts filling up by 7. At that hour, it’s a comfortable 67 degrees. Shoppers like Michelle Robinson are there for two reasons: cooler air and the freshest produce on the tables.“Wanna get here to beat the heat, number one. Number two, I want everything as fresh as I can get it,”she said.

The heat isn’t just changing shopper habits; vendors are adjusting too. Mike Campuzano from M&L Campuzano Farms says the late-morning rush typically arrives around 10 or 11, but the heat is pulling more people in earlier. For local farmers, this Sunday market is a big deal. Melissa, a seven-year vendor, said it’s a major source of farm income.“It’s huge. This is a produce-driven market, so a lot of our farm income comes from here.”Meanwhile, vendor Brian Hooper of Patrick’s Garden is already looking ahead, planning to plant winter crops by the end of August.
