Sacramento International Airport Just Became the First in the Nation to Use AI for Curbside Traffic. Here's What That Means for You.

If you’ve ever sat in traffic at Sacramento International Airport waiting to pick someone up, you know the drill. Cars idling, horns honking, and that one driver who parks right at the door. SMF is trying to fix that with a first-of-its-kind AI system that monitors curbside loading zones.

The airport partnered with a company called Automotus to install cameras across 28 zones at both Terminals A and B. The system gives drivers a four-minute window to load or unload. If you go over, an airport officer gets an alert, comes to check on you, and then decides whether to issue a citation. The fine starts at $57.50. During a pilot program last September, average wait times dropped from five minutes and 44 seconds to just one minute and 45 seconds. That’s a huge improvement.
