Sacramento's 100 Black Men Is Training the Next Generation of Fire Inspectors

Most people know what a firefighter does. Far fewer know about the career that keeps fires from happening in the first place. Fire inspectors check buildings, enforce safety codes, and catch hazards before they turn into emergencies. Right now, the Sacramento chapter of 100 Black Men is hosting a multi-day training program to bring more diversity into that field, with the first class starting October 3.

Participants pay a registration fee and receive hands-on training, a certificate, and assistance navigating the hiring process. Rocklin Fire Chief Reggie Williams points out that inspectors play a preventive role that rarely gets the spotlight. The organization’s broader mission is mentoring youth, and this program extends that work into real career exposure for underrepresented groups.

A more diverse inspection workforce isn’t just a numbers game. It can improve compliance and build trust in neighborhoods where code enforcement has historically been a source of tension.
