A Friday night football game at Manteca High School ended abruptly after police say shots were fired near the gym area around 9:27 p.m. According to the Manteca Police Department, a physical altercation outside the stadium preceded the gunfire, and the gun was fired into the air. Officers found shell casings on the ground and detained three people. No one was injured.

The game against Cesar Chavez High School was called with four minutes left in the fourth quarter as attendees fled the area. Six officers were already at the school for the game, and police have not yet released details on what charges the three detainees could face. The investigation remains active.

For families across the region, this is a reminder that high school sports are one of the last big gathering spaces where whole communities come together, and incidents like this shake that sense of safety. If you were at the game or have thoughts on security at local sporting events, we want to hear from you. What would make you feel safer under those Friday night lights?
