Buying an old farmhouse is a dream for a lot of folks. The history, the charm, the character. But sometimes that character comes with a few surprises you didn’t exactly plan for. Just ask Aidan and Catherine McGowan, who bought a 120-year-old farmhouse in South Dakota and found something pretty shocking in the living room.

The couple noticed a strange smell they couldn’t quite place, so they decided to pull up the old carpet to see what was going on. What they found was a mess of massive brown and yellow stains covering almost the entire subfloor. Not just a little spot here and there, but the whole room. They said they were horrified, and now they’re planning to tear out the subfloor, remove the bottom three feet of drywall, and lay down new hardwoods to make it right.

Their renovation video has gone viral on Instagram, with tons of people sharing their own stories of hidden surprises in older homes. It’s a good reminder that when you buy a fixer-upper, you’re signing up for more than just paint and new fixtures. Have you ever found something unexpected in a home you bought or rented? Tell us about it in the comments.
