Glacier Point gets all the attention, and it deserves it. But sitting right on top of that granite overlook is a small timber and rock structure that quietly holds a national record. The Geology Hut, built in 1925 by architect Herbert Maier, is considered the first trailside museum in the national park system. Three arched openings act as natural frames, facing north, east and west, so you can step inside and see Yosemite’s mountains and waterfalls composed like paintings.
Getting there depends on the season. The Four Mile Trail climbs from Southside Drive near shuttle stop 11, and it’s steep, with a true length closer to five miles. Parking across the road is limited, so the shuttle is a smart play. Once the road to Glacier Point opens during the warmer, drier months, the equation changes. You can drive up and reach the hut in a few hundred steps, which opens the experience up to just about anyone.
