The Hearth: The Sacramento Living Room That Became a DIY Music and Community Hub

When the indie band Humidity Glow called it quits in 2024, August and Dove Rose didn’t pack up the microphones. Instead, they renamed their Sacramento living room venue The Hearth and doubled down on their mission. The volunteer-run space hosts live music where no one is turned away for lack of funds, blending a vintage aesthetic with a community-first approach that stands out in an era of rising ticket prices.

The Hearth has grown well beyond concerts. Since 2021, the Roses have hosted two gender-affirming clothing swaps, and volunteers have created a zine called the Heart to document the community. Up next is a series of performance videos titled“Hearth to Heart.”August Rose says the name reflects the goal: a figurative hearth at the center of the home, a place where people gather and feel safe.
