TSA Finds Civil War Cannonballs in Grandmother's Suitcase at Alabama Airport

A routine TSA screening at Gulf Shores International Airport turned into a history lesson on July 18 when agents discovered five Civil War-era cannonballs wrapped in paper towels inside a passenger’s checked suitcase. The cannonballs, about the size of grapefruits, were inactive but immediately raised red flags. After an investigation, the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office determined the artifacts had been stolen from nearby Fort Morgan, a historic site that once defended Mobile Bay during the Civil War.

The culprit turned out to be a juvenile who had swiped the cannonballs from a storage area at the fort and stashed them in his grandmother’s luggage without her knowledge. She told authorities she had no idea the items were in her bag. Fort Morgan decided not to press charges, and the relics were returned to their proper home. TSA Officer Justin Dupree, who made the discovery, said he’d seen inert grenades and training munitions before but never a stolen artifact situation quite like this one.
