When a family scandal hits the headlines, the fallout doesn’t just affect the accused—it ripples through everyone caught in its orbit. Amy Duggar is painfully aware of this, which is why her recent conversation with the alleged victim in her cousin Joseph Duggar’s case speaks volumes about choosing compassion over silence.

In an appearance on“The Sarah Fraser Show”podcast on Tuesday, July 14, Amy, 39, opened up about reaching out to the 9-year-old girl who came forward with allegations against Joseph in connection with an incident during a 2020 family vacation. Rather than offering legal advice or empty platitudes, Amy did something far more personal: she offered perspective and a lifeline.“I don’t want to speak for her or anything like that, but I will just tell you when I talked to this person, I just gave her hope,”she explained.“I said,‘This doesn’t have to destroy you. It really truly doesn’t.’I just tried to offer her encouragement. I told her that if she ever just needed a safe place to talk, that I’m here.”

Joseph, 31, was arrested in March and charged with lewd and lascivious molestation of a child under 12 and lewd and lascivious conduct by a person 18 or older following the allegations. He entered a written not guilty plea and requested a jury trial, despite an affidavit indicating he allegedly admitted his actions during a pretext call with the girl’s father.

What’s particularly striking about Amy’s approach is her acknowledgment of the invisible weight these situations place on victims. She encouraged the young girl to seek counseling and to speak openly, but more importantly, she validated the courage it takes to come forward in a family system shaped by the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP), an ultra-conservative organization the Duggar family follows closely.“She’s been shamed her entire life through the IBLP friendships and all of that that it is her fault. That’s what they teach,”Amy said.“I just offered her my entire support.”

Amy’s public stance—predicting that Florida will“throw the book”at her cousin and criticizing what she calls“not good”legal counsel—underscores a deeper fracture within the family. This isn’t the typical protective silence that might shield relatives. Instead, it’s a signal that some members of the Duggar clan are willing to stand with victims, even when it means directly challenging the family narrative. Joseph remains free on a $600,000 bond with restrictions preventing contact with his alleged victim and limiting unsupervised time with his own four children.

For the alleged victim navigating this public ordeal at just nine years old, knowing that an adult family member believes her—truly believes her—could be the difference between healing and lasting harm.
