A frightening avalanche struck the Castle Peak area in Nevada County, leaving nine skiers missing and sending search and rescue teams into action. The group, which included four guides from Blackbird Mountain Guides and eleven clients, was winding down a three-day skiing trip when disaster struck. Rescuers began their search after receiving a report of the avalanche around 11:30 a.m., quickly mobilizing 46 first responders from multiple agencies.
As of Tuesday night, six survivors were rescued from the snow after building a makeshift shelter with a tarp while awaiting help. Capt. Russell Green noted that although this backcountry adventure is becoming more popular, skiers must recognize the risks, especially with recent avalanche warnings reported by the Sierra Avalanche Center. Thankfully, the rescue teams were able to recover six of those trapped, though two were taken to the hospital for treatment.
This incident highlights the unpredictability of nature and the importance of being prepared for the challenges of outdoor activities. It’s a sobering reminder to think twice before hitting the slopes—especially when the forecast hints at troubling weather ahead!
