When a coyote was spotted swimming toward Alcatraz Island, you might have thought it was just the start of a Hollywood adventure. But rather than taking a quick dip from San Francisco, this intrepid canine swam from Angel Island State Park, a remarkable journey of about two miles! It gained widespread attention in January after a viral video showed it valiantly struggling to escape the chilly waters, which left many wondering about its fate.

Wildlife ecologist Bill Merkle from the National Park Service expressed surprise at the coyote’s origins, noting how resilient and adaptable coyotes are in the wild. Following its sighting, park biologists conducted thorough searches on Alcatraz to find tracks or evidence of the daring swimmer. They even collected scat samples to confirm the coyote’s lineage matched that of Angel Island’s residents.

The team’s efforts to track down the adventurous critter for relocation were in response to the seabird nesting grounds on Alcatraz. Unfortunately, despite their best attempts, the coyote simply vanished from sight. So what happened to our daring swimmer? Did he make it back home, or is he now the stuff of legends? One thing’s for sure: this coyote certainly showed us that not all heroes wear capes; some swim right into the history books!
