Dolly Parton left this world on August 25, but she didn’t leave it quiet. Her first posthumous song,“Bound to Ride,”dropped Wednesday on YouTube, two weeks after we lost her to a private cancer battle. The track is part of“Where the Soul Never Dies: Celebrating 80 Years of The Stanley Brothers,”a tribute album arriving October 16 and honoring the duo whose music shaped a generation of country and bluegrass. Dolly recorded her vocals back in 2022 at her own personal studio, singing the same song the Stanley Brothers cut in 1964, and the album also features Willie Nelson, Sierra Ferrell, Dierks Bentley, Steve Martin, and Ed Helms.

What makes this release so special is that it wasn’t a vault track pulled out to fill a gap. Dolly chose to honor the roots of the music that raised her, and she did it her way, on her turf, with the original artists. Her sister Stella Parton put Dolly’s work ethic into words:“My sister worked so hard for so long and just kept going. Even until the last conversation I had with her, she was working. That was her passion.”That passion didn’t end with her passing either.“Dolly: A True Original Musical”begins previews December 7 at the St. James Theatre in New York City, with opening night set for January 19, 2027, on what would have been Dolly’s 81st birthday, exactly as she wished.

So whether you grew up on“Jolene”or discovered her through her later years, there’s still new Dolly to hold onto, and a tribute album and a Broadway show coming to carry her legacy forward. Take a few minutes this week, pull up“Bound to Ride,”and let that unmistakable voice remind you why she was one of a kind. Which Dolly song will you always come back to? Tell us in the comments and share your favorite memory with us.
