Downtown Sacramento Light Rail Goes Bus-Only This Weekend

If you’re planning to hop on SacRT’s light rail this weekend, pump the brakes—13 stations across downtown Sacramento are shutting down Thursday through Sunday for platform construction at the 8th and O station.

Here’s what’s going down: The entire downtown corridor is getting a major makeover, which means shuttle buses will be your new best friend for the next four days. We’re talking about stations from Globe all the way down to Sacramento Valley Station, plus the County Center stops and Archives Plaza. That’s a lot of familiar train platforms sitting empty. The good news? SacRT isn’t leaving anyone stranded. Shuttle buses will run every 20 to 30 minutes with pickup and drop-off points near each closed station, so you won’t be standing on the corner wondering what went wrong.

The Blue Line bus bridge will operate between 13th Street and Globe Station, while the Gold Line will run between 13th Street Station and Sacramento Valley Station. It’s not ideal, but it beats walking across downtown in July heat. If you’re a regular light rail commuter, this is the time to plan ahead—check the updated schedules on the SacRT website and maybe leave a few extra minutes for your trip since buses move a little differently than trains.

The construction itself is part of long-term platform improvements at 8th and O, one of the busier downtown stations. These kinds of infrastructure upgrades are necessary for keeping the system running smoothly and safely, even if they’re inconvenient in the short term. The silver lining? Once this work wraps up, the stations should be in better shape for daily riders.

If you’ve got flexibility with your commute, this might be a good weekend to work from home or try a different route. But if downtown travel is non-negotiable, just roll with the buses and stay patient. Four days of shuttle service beats months of half-finished platforms down the road.
