Fix50 Construction Finally Wraps Up in Sacramento: What Changed and What Comes Next

After nearly six years, the Fix50 project in Sacramento is coming to an end. The highway work, which stretches from the I-5 interchange to Watt Avenue, brought wider shoulders, a new HOV lane, and a taller median barrier. Caltrans says the project was never behind schedule because the contract was based on working days rather than a fixed delivery date. For drivers who have navigated the cones and narrowed lanes since 2020, the finish line is finally in sight.

The next few weeks will still require some patience. Overnight lane reductions are expected between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. as crews complete final touches. But the bigger conversation is about safety. Twenty-three people have died in the work zone since construction began, more than double the pre-construction rate. Two deadly crashes happened just this month. Caltrans points to speeding as a major factor in those incidents.

As the cones come down and traffic patterns shift back to normal, the hope is that the upgrades make a real difference. A wider shoulder gives drivers more room to recover. A taller median barrier adds a layer of protection. But infrastructure only does so much. The rest is up to us. Do you think six years of construction was worth the safety improvements? Let us know in the comments.
