Koe Wetzel Calls "Jaded" the Most Pop Song He'll Ever Record, and It All Started With a Forgotten Chorus

Koe Wetzel and Ella Langley’s“Jaded”is one of the biggest country debuts of the year, and it almost never existed. The song started as a chorus ERNEST, Langley and Jordan Schmidt wrote months ago and then abandoned. When the four writers gathered at Schmidt’s Nashville home studio on Jan. 14, ERNEST hummed the hook, and Wetzel insisted they finish it that day. The result is a track that pairs dark relationship lyrics with’80s disco energy, nodding at Depeche Mode and“Stayin’Alive.”

Wetzel calls it“100% the most pop song that I’ll probably ever record in my life.”Producer Gabe Simon and the team worked through 17 mixes to get the balance right between danceable joy and heartbreak, and the demo vocals Wetzel and Langley recorded early on stayed on the master. Langley’s harmonies and ad-libs add a Stevie Nicks-style shimmer to the whole thing.
