Matsui and Vang Face Off in Sacramento's Most Heated Congressional Debate Yet

Doris Matsui’s first primary loss in nearly two decades came in June when Mai Vang upset the long-serving congresswoman. Thursday night at Coloma Community Center, the two Democrats faced off for the first time since that shocking primary result, and the debate was contentious from the start. The race for California’s 7th Congressional District—redrawn to stretch from central Sacramento through Elk Grove and Galt—has become a referendum on whether voters want established seniority or fresh momentum pushing harder on urgent issues.

Matsui’s strategy centers on measurable results. She’s brought billions in federal funding back to Sacramento for flood protection, infrastructure, and other district priorities. Building those relationships in Congress takes time, she argued, and Vang simply doesn’t understand how Washington works. You can’t walk in and decide to do something; you have to build coalitions and trust first. Vang’s response was direct: if seniority and relationships were saving Sacramento, the region wouldn’t be struggling under the current Trump administration. She pointed specifically to healthcare, immigration enforcement, and ICE detention as areas where Matsui’s approach has failed to produce change. Vang also raised campaign financing, noting that Matsui accepts donations from defense contractors and companies with ties to Israel—contributions that Vang says compromise her ability to act with urgency.

Forum attendees were divided on the debate’s tone and substance. Some appreciated the directness and wanted even more specificity from both candidates on their plans. Others felt the heated nature of the exchange was troubling.
