Martin Mulcahy was a dentist in Chichester, England, living a quiet, ordinary professional life. Then a friend named Alan Knight showed him photographs of a bear with a broken tooth, and Mulcahy couldn’t bring himself to say no. That decision turned into a twenty-year second career spent repairing the teeth of rescued wild animals, and earned him a nickname he never asked for: Bear Drills.
His first patient was a 180-kilogram sloth bear named Anthony. The surgery nearly ended in heartbreak when the anaesthesia went wrong and Anthony stopped breathing. The team used a crash kit and adrenaline, and Mulcahy performed three minutes of chest compressions. When the bear finally woke up, Mulcahy described the feeling as triumphant. Anthony went on to live another decade. Since that day, Mulcahy has treated roughly 200 bears, along with tigers, lions, hyenas, gorillas, and orangutans.
Many of those animals arrived after deliberate cruelty. Poachers sometimes hammer out an animal’s teeth to make it appear tame, leaving behind damage that only someone with a dentist’s training can undo. Mulcahy does exactly that, quietly and without fanfare. He’s proof that a skill you use every day can become something far bigger in someone else’s life.
