Nevada County's New River Shuttle Solves Summer's Parking Nightmare

Summer at the South Yuba River is a cherished tradition for families across Nevada County—but getting there has become its own adventure. Packed parking lots, gridlocked weekends, and the creeping danger of pedestrians dodging big rigs on Highway 49 finally pushed county leaders to act.

Enter the solution: a weekend shuttle service that launched just last weekend as part of Nevada County’s push to reduce congestion, improve safety, and actually make it possible to reach the river without circling the lot for twenty minutes. The shuttle operates Fridays through Sundays until September 6th, with free parking at the Nevada County Government Center and $2 per ride to the river. It’s a modest investment that addresses a genuine problem—and early numbers suggest people are ready for it.

The real issue wasn’t just parking scarcity. Nevada County Supervisor Susan Hoek and Operations Supervisor Tim Hodge pointed to a safety crisis that most casual visitors don’t think about: families forced to walk along a narrow, winding Highway 49 with limited shoulders, heavy truck traffic, and a bridge span that offers nowhere to go when a semi comes barreling through.“People parking over the white lines, people walking with their children down Highway 49—it’s a busy, busy road with a lot of big trucks, a lot of fast traffic, and a very windy road,”Hoek explained. For the county, the shuttle isn’t just a convenience—it’s damage control.

The first weekend brought 66 boardings, a modest start but meaningful for a service filling a gap that didn’t exist before. Jahiemu Kaiyano, a Nevada County resident, captured why this matters:“The bus actually doesn’t run on Friday or on Saturday and Sunday, so that would be amazing.”For people without cars or who want to avoid the parking hunt entirely, the shuttle is a genuine game-changer. Tyler Teitel, a Nevada City resident, summed up the weekend scramble:“Yeah, yeah, it’s usually pretty crazy. Even today felt like we were coming a little late to find parking, and I feel like we kind of got lucky today.”For him and others, the shuttle isn’t a luxury—it’s backup plan that finally exists.

Whether this becomes a permanent fixture or fades when summer ends depends on ridership momentum and the county’s appetite for funding it beyond September. But on a Friday or Saturday afternoon in July, when the river is calling and the parking lot is full, a $2 shuttle from the Nevada County Government Center starts looking like the smartest two dollars you’ll spend all week.
