Paddles and Pups: Elk Grove's Pickleball Rally for Rescue Beagles

When life hands you rescue beagles, apparently the Northern California Beagle Rescue decided to grab paddles and hit the court.

This week, an Elk Grove pickleball fundraiser brought community players together to support a truly worthy cause: helping dozens of beagles learn what it means to just be dogs. The organization currently cares for 47 beagles that came from the Ridglan Farms testing facility in Wisconsin, where hundreds of dogs were released to animal care groups across the country earlier this year following serious accusations of mistreatment. These aren’t just rescue stories—they’re transformations.

What makes this fundraiser particularly meaningful is the nature of the dogs’recovery. As Mindy Yamasaki from the organization explained, many of these beagles are still being medically cleared, and they’re essentially learning how to be real beagles after spending their lives in cages. That’s not just rescue—that’s reorientation. Every adoption helps make room for another dog still waiting for that chance. The Northern California Beagle Rescue, which has been operating in Elk Grove and the Bay Area for decades, has found permanent homes for about 4,200 dogs throughout its history. Those numbers matter, but what matters more is that 47 dogs have a fighting chance because people in our community showed up on a court with paddles.

It’s a reminder that fundraising doesn’t always have to look like the traditional galas or charity walks we’re used to. Sometimes the best causes find their champions in the most unexpected places—and sometimes those champions are just neighbors who love both pickleball and dogs. Every game played this week moved these beagles one step closer to real homes.
