Three weeks on the run: Stockton driver arrested for deadly I-80 hit-and-run

It took California Highway Patrol three weeks to track down the driver who fled one of the deadliest crashes on Interstate 80 this year. On May 26 around 11 p.m., a commercial vehicle headed westbound near Clipper Gap hit the center divider, sending its trailer careening into eastbound traffic. The trailer struck a Ford F-150, killing its driver instantly. Then the commercial driver vanished.

Until June 18, when Robert Bell, a 60-year-old from Stockton, was found in Martinez and arrested. The gap between the crash and the collar underscores how challenging these investigations can be—especially when a driver abandons the scene and tries to disappear into the system. Bell now faces felony charges of hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter after being booked into the Placer County Main Jail.

What makes this case notable isn’t just the tragic loss of life. It’s the fact that in an era of license plate readers, traffic cameras, and cellular data, a driver responsible for a fatal collision still managed to evade authorities for weeks. The crash happened on one of Northern California’s busiest corridors during late-night hours, and investigators had to methodically piece together evidence—witness accounts, vehicle data, commercial vehicle records—before they could identify and locate Bell in a neighboring county.

The death on Interstate 80 is a grim reminder that hit-and-run crashes remain a persistent problem on California highways. When drivers flee, they don’t just avoid accountability; they rob the victim’s family of immediate answers and closure. They gamble that distance and time will shield them from consequences. Sometimes it works for a while. Sometimes it doesn’t.
