West Sacramento just threw open the gates to a completely transformed public space, and the community showed up ready to play. West Acre Park’s grand reopening on Tuesday marked the debut of some seriously needed amenities—including the city’s first public pickleball courts, a move that signals West Sacramento is finally getting serious about drawing people downtown and giving residents real reasons to gather.
The park’s renovation lineup reads like a wish list come to life: a play structure, splash pad, basketball court, skatepark, and soccer fields all rolled into one reimagined community hub. But it’s that pickleball court addition that caught attention. The sport has exploded across California, and West Sacramento’s decision to include courts from day one shows they’re paying attention to what people actually want to do.
Kate Smith, Parks and Recreation Director for the city of West Sacramento, nailed the vibe:“The second that the fence came down this morning, the entire community came out to use and experience all of our play features. We had the splash pad going. We have kids going down the slide, we have pickleball, we have skaters. So it really is meeting all of our needs of our community and uplifting our entire population.”That kind of instant adoption doesn’t happen by accident—it’s what happens when you design for real community needs instead of checking boxes.
The whole thing was made possible by a $7.8 million Proposition 68 Statewide Park Development and Community Revitalization Program Grant from California State Parks, plus additional funding from other donors. That’s serious investment in a space that’s clearly going to get used hard and loved harder.
If you missed the ribbon cutting, the city’s throwing another celebration on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. It’s the kind of project that reminds you why good public spaces matter—they’re where communities actually become communities.
