Winter Wonderland Alerts: Snow Hits the Bay Area After Three Years!

It seems the Bay Area is ready to trade its sunny disposition for a little winter magic, as snow flurries have finally graced us at elevations above 2,500 feet! The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory on Tuesday, reminding everyone that it has been three long years since the last one.

So, what does that mean for the hiking trails and the eagles soaring above Mt. Diablo? Snowflakes started to fall, especially around the higher peaks, bringing with them a wintry mix that has people dreaming of snowmen and snowball fights. In fact, measurable snow has already been spotted atop Mt. Hamilton near San Jose, giving us all the more reason to dig out our warm jackets and hot cocoa mix.

Expect a few inches of snow overnight, but not all of it will stick just yet. Mount Diablo’s roads are closed due to early signs of black ice, and it looks like those looking to venture up the mountain should wait a little while longer. With the majestic backdrop of snow capped peaks and a temperature hovering around 35 degrees, it’s hard to deny the excitement in the air. Here’s hoping we get those classic winter scenes, even if just for a moment before the Bay Area sun turns it all back to rain!
