Andrew Garfield Leads a Faith-Fueled Rebellion in "The Uprising," Now in Theaters

Andrew Garfield is trading the superhero suit for a farmer’s plow in“The Uprising,”a sweeping historical epic now playing in theaters nationwide. Garfield stars as the Ploughman, a nameless farmer who becomes the unlikely leader of a faith-filled rebellion against King Richard II. It’s the story that helped give rise to the Robin Hood legend, told from the perspective of ordinary people who finally decided they’d had enough.

Director Paul Greengrass, who also wrote the film, told CBN News’Studio 5 that the 14th-century setting felt strikingly current. He described a society divided between rich oligarchs and everyone else, and said he set out to build something grand in the spirit of Gladiator or Braveheart. Thomasin McKenzie co-stars as Alyce, a woman seeking justice after being betrayed and cast aside. The cast has spoken openly about the physical demands of the production and the tight-knit community that formed on set.

Faith sits at the center of the film. Greengrass explained that for people in the 1300s, justice came from God and injustice came from man, a worldview that shaped how the rebellion played out. That theme, ordinary folks standing together against corruption and trusting in something bigger than themselves, is one that resonates deeply with country audiences.
