Apple's New Watch Records and Recaps Your Conversations, and People Are Calling It "Black Mirror"

Apple introduced a feature called Audio Intelligence for the Apple Watch Series 12 at its September 9 event, and it’s already the most debated piece of tech of the year. Live Rewind shows the last fifteen seconds of a conversation as text on your wrist, while Siri Recap generates automatic summaries of conversations, complete with titles and key points. The watch launches September 18 starting at £369.

Apple is being upfront about privacy. The company says audio is processed in an isolated chip compartment, deleted immediately, never stored, and the feature requires users to opt in. When Live Rewind is active, the watch plays an audible chime and displays a microphone indicator. For listeners who are hard of hearing or caring for someone with memory challenges, the accessibility potential is real and worth acknowledging.

Still, the reaction online has been loud. Social media users branded the feature“creepy”and compared it to a Black Mirror episode, with one person joking they’ll tattoo“I do not consent to being recorded”on their forehead. The heart of the concern isn’t the person wearing the watch. It’s everyone standing nearby who never got a say.
