Bison Make a Bold Comeback in Illinois: Prairie Life Just Got Fuzzier!

After a staggering 200-year absence, American bison are back on the Illinois prairie! This historic homecoming was celebrated by the Santee Sioux community at the Burlington Prairie Forest Preserve, where drums echoed and cheers filled the air as the bison were welcomed into their old stomping grounds. Three males and three females have made the trip from their trailer to a nearby enclosure, where they’ll get cozy with the frosty landscape before roaming a larger fenced area come spring.

The American Indian Center, partnering with Kane County Forests Preserve staff, will oversee the herd, making sure these shaggy giants have a smooth transition back into the wild. While the comeback of just six bison may seem modest compared to the millions that once roamed North America, this marks a crucial step in ecological restoration. Who would’ve thought that these big guys could elicit such joy and celebrate with a drum circle? What’s next? Bungalow-style digs for prairie pets?
