California Governor's Race: Why the Environment Just Became the Deciding Issue

A new Public Policy Institute of California poll shows Xavier Becerra with a commanding 61-36 lead over Republican Steve Hilton in the governor’s race, but the bigger story isn’t the lead itself—it’s what Sacramento voters say matters most. Eighty-five percent of likely voters told pollsters that candidates’positions on environmental issues will influence their vote. That’s not a side issue or campaign noise. That’s voters telling us what’s at the top of their priority list.

For Sacramento, this makes complete sense. We’re not talking about abstract climate policy here. We’re talking about the wildfires that threaten our neighborhoods, the droughts that affect our water supply, the air quality that impacts our kids’health. These environmental concerns aren’t theoretical for California residents—they’re showing up in our communities and affecting our daily lives. That’s why 85% of voters are paying attention to what candidates promise on the environment. Governor Newsom’s 53% approval rating on environmental handling suggests Californians see it as a critical area, especially when you compare it to Trump and Congress sitting below 30% on the same measure.

The poll shows Becerra leading across every demographic group in California: different age groups, income levels, men and women, renters and homeowners, all regions of the state. Democrats also hold a similar advantage in House races at 63-35. With the environment clearly the dominant issue for voters and Becerra holding such a strong lead, the race’s trajectory seems set. So what environmental policies matter most to you, and do you think either candidate has a realistic plan to address them?
