Us Weekly compiled a running tribute to the celebrities we lost this year, and the list spans music, film, sports and activism. Country legend Dolly Parton died August 25 at 80 in Nashville, and her rep remembered her as“a rhinestone life that shone bright enough for the world to see.”It’s a line that fits her perfectly.
The losses stretch well beyond Nashville. Actor Tim Curry died August 26 at 80. Feminist icon Gloria Steinem passed September 2 at 92. Music executive Clive Davis died in June at 94. ESPN analyst and former NHL coach Barry Melrose died at 70, with the announcement coming September 9. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said Melrose“cut an unmistakable figure,”from the mullet to the long suit coats. Wrestling fans also lost Andy“The Butcher”Williams, who died September 5 at 48 after collapsing in a match.
What stands out most is the range. Dolly gave us songs and free books through her Imagination Library. Tim Curry gave us characters we’ll quote forever. Barry Melrose made hockey highlights feel like a conversation with an old friend. Peter Cullen gave a generation the voice of Optimus Prime. These folks weren’t just famous.
