Céline Dion Makes Emotional Return to the Stage in Paris After Stiff Person Syndrome Battle

Céline Dion is back on stage, and she did it on her own terms. Saturday night she opened a 26-date residency at Paris La Défense Arena, her first full return to performing since she was diagnosed with stiff person syndrome in December 2022. The diagnosis forced her to cancel her Courage world tour in 2023, and for a long stretch, it wasn’t clear when, or if, she’d perform again.

The Paris opener was everything you’d expect from a woman who fought that hard to get there. Dion got emotional and sang through tears as the crowd applauded, telling the audience she had promised not to cry, then sharing that she wanted to sing for them, for herself, for life. She closed out the night with“My Heart Will Go On.”

Getting back to that stage took serious work. Dion prepared with Pilates, ballet, physical therapy, vocal therapy and immunotherapy, and she’s been open about how determined she was to return. She announced the residency back in March while celebrating her birthday. If you’ve been pulling for her since the news first broke, this one probably hit close to home.
