Colbert's Late Show Goes Out on Top as Widow's Bay Breaks Emmy Records

The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards lit up the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sept. 14, and it was a night full of farewells and firsts. Stephen Colbert’s Late Show took home outstanding variety series in its final season, finishing with six Emmys overall, the most the show ever earned in a single year. Colbert kept his acceptance speech grounded, thanking the 200-plus people behind the scenes and giving a special nod to his wife, Evelyn.

The night belonged to Widow’s Bay, though. The freshman comedy collected 14 Emmys, setting records for the most wins in a single season and the most ever for a first-year comedy series. Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl LX Halftime Show, DTF St. Louis, The Pitt and The Traitors each scored seven awards. Mariska Hargitay hosted for the first time, becoming the first woman to do so in 15 years, and she kept things lively with a few parody songs. There were also emotional moments, including Sally Field and Reba McEntire honoring Dolly Parton and Noah Kahan performing during the In Memoriam segment.

Two icons added to their legacies as well. Jean Smart and Allison Janney each won their eighth Primetime Emmy, tying Cloris Leachman and Julia Louis-Dreyfus for the most acting wins in Emmy history. Which moment from Sunday night stuck with you the most?
