When a marriage of two decades ends, the fallout rarely stays private—especially when children are involved. But the allegations now facing Doubling Down With the Derricos alum Karen Derrico suggest a situation that goes far beyond typical post-divorce tension.
Deon Derrico, 42, recently opened up to Us Weekly about what he claims were repeated threats his ex-wife made against him and their 14 children. According to his account, Karen, 46, told the kids she would kill them, stating things like I’ll kill y’all. I’ll go to jail for it. I’ll gladly go to jail for it—words he says she repeated multiple times. The couple, who divorced in 2024 after 20 years together, continued living in the same home while trying to navigate co-parenting, which is when Deon first learned about these alleged statements directly from the kids themselves.
What makes Deon’s testimony particularly striking is his initial attempt to contextualize the comments. He explained to Karen that certain phrases—like the common saying I brought you into this world, I’ll take you out—are deeply embedded in Black culture and aren’t always meant literally. He told her the comments had to stop anyway, given how times have changed and how differently such statements are now interpreted. Karen reportedly agreed and apologized. Then, according to Deon, she did it again—multiple times—and the children were too afraid to tell him immediately because they worried about how he’d react or whether he’d get their mother in trouble.
Beyond threats directed at the children, Deon also claims Karen verbally threatened his life. He noted that she admitted to witnesses that she wished she had a gun and would shoot him. While Deon didn’t believe she’d physically carry out the threat herself—citing her smaller frame—he expressed concern that she might manipulate someone else into acting on her behalf, drawing a comparison to situations he’s seen play out on television where women convince men to commit violence on their behalf.
Karen was arraigned on June 23 on charges of harassment, violating a restraining order, preventing a witness from testifying through threat of violence, and aggravated stalking. She pleaded not guilty. Her attorney, Jess Marchese, released a statement to Oxygen saying The allegations are completely false and that they will prove they were completely fabricated by Mr. Derrico. Karen was released on a $2,000 bond with an ankle monitor, with her next hearing scheduled for Thursday, August 6. She has not publicly addressed Deon’s claims, and as of now, neither Karen nor TLC has responded to requests for comment.
This case underscores a painful reality: when relationships dissolve, especially those involving multiple children, the ripple effects can be profound and legally serious. The coming months will test whether these allegations hold up in court or whether, as her legal team contends, they’re fabrications in a bitter custody dispute.
