The popularity of e-bikes is on the rise, but so are the injuries that come with them. A recent report indicates that at least 20,000 people are hurt annually due to e-bike accidents, with around 3,000 requiring hospitalization. In response to these alarming numbers, the newly formed California Independent Electric Mobility Council is gearing up to tackle safety issues related to the increasingly common electric bikes.
Experts from various organizations are concerned about the challenges e-bikes present on shared paths, especially regarding their speed. Rich Fowler from the American River Bike Patrol shares a harrowing story of a recent accident where an e-biker’s speed contributed to a head-on collision. With e-bikes capable of reaching speeds up to 28 mph, controlling them becomes a serious issue for inexperienced riders. With safety on everyone’s mind, the council plans to meet multiple times with the goal of making recommendations for improving e-bike safety without discouraging their use.
So as e-bikes continue to zoom through urban environments, the question remains: How do we keep the joy of riding intact while also ensuring safety? It seems the answer might be a combination of better awareness, stronger helmet standards, and, perhaps, a few speed limits on those crowded trails!
