Emma Roberts Stands By Her Tea-Dipped Wedding Dress: "I Wanted to Look Like a Haunted Doll"

Emma Roberts married Cody John in July at his family’s backyard in Sun Valley, Idaho, and this week she finally told the story behind that dress. It was a custom Monique Lhuillier gown, vintage-inspired and form-fitting, and yes, it was tea-dipped on purpose to give it that soft, aged tone. On the“Sibling Revelry”podcast she said it straight: she wanted to look like a haunted doll. She also knew people found it odd, and she didn’t care one bit.

The rest of the day had the same personal stamp on it. Two hundred guests under a tent at the family home. Her 5-year-old son Rhodes walked her down the aisle. For the after-party she changed into a black Chantilly lace corset, because a night like that deserves more than one look. Her father, Eric Roberts, was not at the wedding, but that’s a separate story.

For anyone who grew up watching a grandmother’s wedding dress come out of a cedar chest, that tea-stained color isn’t strange at all. It’s what happens to lace after a few decades, and plenty of brides have chased that exact look on purpose. The only difference here is that she’s saying it out loud and loving it.
