Emmys Face #EmmysSoWhite Backlash Again as Black Actors Shut Out of Televised Wins

The Primetime Emmys aired this week, and the hashtag #EmmysSoWhite came right back with it. Black actors were largely shut out of the acting categories presented during the televised broadcast, the fifth year in a row this conversation has dominated the days after the show.

The numbers behind the frustration aren’t a secret. The Television Academy’s 2026 transparency report shows 67% of its members are white, 9.2% are Black, and 7% are biracial or multiracial. When the voting body looks like that, a diverse nominee slate can still produce a very predictable winner’s list. Viewers have been here since 2015’s #OscarsSoWhite, and plenty are saying they’re worn out from repeating it.

There were genuine reasons to celebrate, though. Cynthia Adarkwa won her second Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series for“The Pitt,”and Octavia Spencer, Ernest Harden Jr., and 50 Cent all collected their first Emmys at the Creative Arts ceremony last week. The talent is not the problem. The question now is whether the institutions handing out the trophies are willing to change who gets a say.
