From Nogales to the Stage: How Luis Maldonado Became Foreigner's Lead Singer

When Luis Maldonado was five years old, sitting somewhere in Nogales, Sonora, he heard“Feels Like the First Time”on an Arizona radio station. That single moment changed everything. The song grabbed him in a way that nothing else could, and he became obsessed with Foreigner. He picked up multiple instruments, learned to sing, and eventually formed his own band with other musicians he met along the way. But the dream of being connected to Foreigner in some way never left him.

In 2021, that dream started becoming reality when Foreigner’s keyboardist Michael Bluestein reached out and asked Maldonado to join as a rhythm guitarist. He was thrilled to be part of the band, contributing his talents on multiple instruments. Then during a Latin American tour, Maldonado stepped in to sing, and something magical happened. The band realized they’d found their next lead singer. In 2024, it became official. After Kelly Hansen’s departure, Luis Maldonado took over as the frontman of one of rock’s most iconic bands. To make it even more meaningful, Foreigner released Spanish versions of their classic songs in May 2025, with Maldonado leading the charge. When the band performed these Spanish versions live in Latin America, audiences were genuinely moved to tears. It wasn’t just nostalgia anymore; it was a connection that transcended language.

The band’s navigating significant changes right now. Mick Jones, the only founding member still actively involved, revealed a Parkinson’s diagnosis in 2024 and can no longer tour, though he remains creatively engaged. Original singer Lou Gramm is planning to retire from live performance by the end of 2026. But instead of fading away, Foreigner just released a brand new live album on July 24, 2026, and the band is seriously discussing recording new original material alongside re-recording unreleased songs from their vault.
