Sacramento State’s ceramics class is getting creative while making a difference. This Saturday, they’ll be hosting an Empty Bowls Fundraiser, selling beautiful handcrafted bowls to benefit the ASI Food Pantry on campus. The event, running from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Alpha Fired Arts in North Highlands, aims to raise awareness about hunger while providing meals for those in need.
Instructors and students alike have joined forces to ensure this event isn’t just about bowls, but also about community nourishment. Local businesses are stepping in as well, with delicious soup from Revolution Wines and fresh bread from Moonbelly Bakery, ensuring that every bowl purchased comes with a warm meal. Ethnic studies major Regina Alfaro and child development student Melissa Schmidt have been particularly instrumental in not only crafting the bowls but also in orchestrating vital support from local restaurants.
Owens, the class instructor, believes this symbolizes a critical message: the empty bowl represents those who struggle with hunger daily. With bowl prices ranging from $5 to $50, participants get to fill their unique creations while directly supporting their fellow students. It’s a delightful blend of artistry and goodwill—a reminder that creativity can indeed carry a powerful purpose. After all, what’s better than filling your belly while feeding the community?
